How Your Employees Can Save on Prescription Medicine

Using generics rather than brand-name drugs is one of the best ways to save on prescription drug costs. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says that prices for generic drugs are estimated to be 80 percent to 85 percent less than brand-name drugs. Employees covered under self-funded health benefit plans administered by Star Marketing and Administration, Inc., use generics at a high rate and should be encouraged to continue the good work.

It’s always a good time to remind your employees about ways to save on prescription drugs. In addition to using generics, there are other ways to save:

  • Ask for an alternative: Your employees can ask their doctor if there are less costly prescription-drug alternatives that would be effective, or if over-the-counter drugs could be used.
  • Try samples: If an employee is prescribed a new medication, the employee could ask for a sample first to check its effectiveness and determine whether there are side effects before buying.
  • Consider mail order: Employees can check into using mail order for obtaining prescription drugs, as it can be less costly.
  • Take as directed: Taking medications as prescribed is important for your employees’ health and may help avoid additional costs in the future.
