World Cup fever: 47% intend to phone in sick for football

Something for the weekend: Almost half (47%) of England and Wales supporters intend to pull a sicky to watch their nation play at this year’s football World Cup. Bookmaker Paddy Power partnered with Research Without Barriers to survey 2,002 football fans from England and Wales. The research found that 46% admitted they plan to skive off work at some point during the tournament, due to three of the daily kick-off times clashing with the nine to five working day.

Educational charity Success4All has been accredited as a living wage employer by the Living Wage Foundation. To gain accreditation, the charity committed to paying its workforce a minimum hourly wage of £10.90, which is higher than the £9.50 per hour government minimum for those aged 23 and above, and the newly announced national living wage of £10.42, due to be implemented in 2023.

Heathrow Airport ground handlers strike over pay

Ground handlers employed by Menzies at Heathrow Airport have commenced strike action today (Friday 18 November) over a pay dispute. The 350 employees, who are members of trade union Unite, started a 72-hour stoppage as of 4am. They have demanded a better pay offer than the ones made to date, which have varied between 2% and 6%, which the union stated amount to real terms pay cuts, below the current real inflation rate of 14.2%.

Tesco launches pay advance scheme for staff

Supermarket chain Tesco has introduced a benefit that will allow its 280,000 employees to access up to 25% of their contractual pay early.
