Affordability, parks and easy commutes are pulling Gen Z to these 10 cities

A new generation of employees are finding their place in the workforce, and they're not only willing to relocate for a job, they're eager to.

Gen Z has fully taken advantage of the opportunities created by remote work. In fact, 9% of Gen Z moved in 2021, and 4.9% of those folks are already plotting their next move, according to a recent poll conducted by SurveyMonkey.

Commercial real estate blog CommercialCafe recently released a list of the top cities for Gen Z employees, ranked based on factors like the local unemployment rate, affordability, percentage of Gen Z-ers already calling those locales home, percentage of Gen Z-ers currently enrolled in schools and the ratio of parks to person.

Big cities and metropolitan areas are historically attractive to younger populations, and Gen Z is no exception. Gen Z tenants made up 27% of Manhattan renters last year, according to RentCafe, up from 17% in 2020. But skyrocketing rent is also leading Gen Z to explore smaller cities and communities, pushing New York to the bottom of the ranking and causing Los Angeles to drop out of the top 20 entirely.

Instead, Minneapolis and Boston find themselves in the top three, partly due to their dedication to green commuting and their school enrollment opportunities. Atlanta snagged first place thanks to its affordability, low unemployment, highly educated Gen Z population and large number of parks.
