Tips To Personalize Your Work Space

If you are like me then you probably spend 40 or more hours per week in your office or cubicle. We often spend more time at work than we do at home, so why not make it your own little space? Before adding those decorative touches, consider your company’s culture. If it’s a conservative company, you’ll want to go easy on the décor. But if you work for a more modern and creative company, you have more room to really personalize your work space.

Not only does personalizing your office space express a bit of your creativity and individuality, it also helps to boost motivation as well as productivity.  It can also help provide you with a sense of ownership and control. Feeling in control over your work environment is especially important for those that work in open office plan environments and cubicles where privacy tends to be more of an issue.  People that work in open office environments and cubicles can feel more emotional stress as they have to juggle the demands of work with constant interruptions, distractions and the feeling of constantly being monitored. Whereas those that work in an office with four walls and a door don’t tend to suffer from this same emotional stress.

Here are some creative ways to spice up a drab cubicle or office space. They can all help change your mood, frame of mind and create a fun and unique space for you to work in.

Rearrange your space

I love this suggestion from Quill‘s latest post on 15 Ways To Personalize Your Desk For Ultimate Efficiency. They offer a lot of great suggestions in their post but this particular suggestion is very cost effective, pretty easy to implement and can change your whole outlook on your work space. Simply moving things around can revive a desk that has become boring. Personalize your desk by arranging it in a way that works for you. Maybe you have a certain order that you like to work in. Set your work space up in a way that flows with you and how you work.

Create a fake window

I came across this suggestion from Reader’s Digest. I think that this is a unique, easy and create way to spruce up your work space. Hang a large piece of art or an enlarged photo of a scene that inspires you, such as an ocean view or a landscape. Frame it with lightweight window molding, and voila! You’ve got a faux picture window.

Add some green

Green things make us happy—and I’m not only talking about money! Add some plants to your office space to bring the calming look and feel of nature right to your desk. Plus they can help purify the air too. No green thumb? Artificial plants still add beauty to your desk.  A lot of artificial plants look so realistic now too. It is a great way to add flowers too.

Change your lighting

A small table lamp with a warm natural-light bulb will counteract your office’s harsh fluorescent lighting.  For those that suffer from winter blues (even a little) adding a light therapy desk lamp can make all the difference.

Whatever you decide to implement, have fun and even the smallest change can make a big difference.
