Winter weather can impact a business in many ways, from maintaining clear sidewalks and entryways, to servicing HVAC units, to inspecting the condition of the roof. What about the tire tread on your vehicles? Do the windshield wipers need to be replaced? So much time is dedicated to preparing the building for winter that we often overlook another important aspect of the business, our vehicles.
Are your employees prepared to handle driving during tough winter conditions? Before winter weather strikes, prepare your auto fleet so your drivers do not face additional challenges when they get behind the wheel. Below are five tips to for senior living operators to prevent winter weather roadblocks for their residents and employees:

  1. Check tire pressure. As temperatures begin to fall, so does the pressure on your tires. Check each tire to ensure they are filled to the recommended pressure. The recommended tire pressure can be found in the owner’s manual or the placard located on the driver’s side door frame. Bonus Tip: Don’t forget to check the spare tire pressure as well!
  2. Inspect your tire tread and replace tires as needed if the tread appears uneven or deficient.
  3. Schedule vehicle maintenance. This should include, but not be limited to, belts, hoses, air filters, oil, windshield wiper fluid, engine coolant, antifreeze, lights, brakes, and battery operation.
  4. Verify that each vehicle has a stocked emergency kit including jumper cables, an ice scraper, sell phone charger, blanket and a map.
  5. Review your Auto Fleet Safety Manual during monthly safety meetings. Address important topics like traction control when surfaces are slippery, reducing speed, driving with headlights on, following distances, and cell phone usage.
