Both plans have similar contribution limits and the ability to contribute on a pre-tax and Roth basis. The United Mine Workers of America health and pension funds, like more than 1,400 similar one-industry plans, were underfunded. The 457(b) has been available to teachers as well, but has largely been ignored in favor of the 403(b).
