Workplace Violence Prevention Bill Signed into Law

Gov. Gavin Newsom has signed into law a measure that will require nearly every employer in California to have in place a workplace violence prevention plan. The expansive new law, which takes effect July 1, 2024, will require any company with at least one worker to “establish, implement and maintain” a workplace violence prevention plan, as well as require employers to conduct annual workplace violence prevention training and to keep an incident log of violent incidents in the workplace.

HM Courts and Tribunal Service’s June 2023 data revealed an increasing number of employment tribunal cases citing menopause as a contributing factor. There has been a steady rise in cases over the past few years. In 2017, there were five cases, increasing to six in 2018 and seven in 2019. However, the numbers increased to 16 cases in 2020 and further increased to 23 cases in 2021.
